Also note that I only cover matches in my recaps.
Our hosts are Tony Schiavone, Jesse Ventura and Gene Okerlund
Match 1: Television
Title Match- Terry Taylor vs. Steven Regal w/Sir William (c)
A good technical match here, although a little too slow at times. The early
theme of the match see's Regal lock in a variety of submission holds,
with Taylor exploding out of them and getting a few holds of his own. As
the match progressed Taylor managed to lock in more and more holds
and test the champion. As the time gets close to expiring, Taylor comes
close to winning the title, but you never got the feeling from the crowd that
they felt he had a chance. Regal would win before the time expired
following a rollup after a series of them-**1/4
Match 2: Pretty
Wonderful (Paul Orndorff and Paul Roma) w/Masked Assassin vs. Scott Studd and
Brady Boone
Studd is the future Scotty Riggs, and Brady Boone competed in the WWF as Battle
Kat. Essentially an extended squash match. The jobbers got a
fair amount of offense early on, both keeping up with their opponents on
the mat. However it was only a matter of time before the jobbers got
beaten down, and Orndorff hat Boone with the Piledriver, allowing Roma to
pin him with one finger- *
Match 3: Johnny B Badd
vs. Tony Zane
Zane is a veteran wrestler from the Mid South area, who trained alongside Arn
Anderson. Again, pretty much a squash for Badd, as he looked
great here, getting all his signature offense in before winning with a big
pinning combination off the top rope- SQ
Match 4: Cactus Jack
and Maxx Payne vs. Robbie Eagle and Mark Kyle
Robbie Eagle had a good run in SMW and was later known in WCW as The Maestro,
while Mark Kyle also had a stint in SMW as "Killer Kyle".
As before this was essentially a squash for Cactus and Payne, who mauled
their opponents here with a range of power and strikes,
plus Cactus took a few crazy bumps. Payne managed to make Kyle submit to
an Armbar- SQ
Match 5: The Colossal
Kongs (Awesome Kong and Krusher? Kong) vs. Ben Jordan and Scott D'Amore
That's not the same Ben Jordan who did IWA commentary, he's the former GWF
wrestler. Scott D'Amore is the same person who appeared
in TNA as Team Canada's captain. This however was a total squash, with the
Kongs winning in around two minutes- SQ
Match 6: The
Shockmaster vs. JL Sullivan
As is the theme of the show, this was an all out squash, with The Shockmaster
toying with a much smaller opponent.
He won with what Jesse Ventura called "The Big Squeeze"- SQ
Match 7: 'Flyin' Brian
Pillman vs. Sgt Buddy Lee Parker
Pillman dominated in the early goings in this match, getting some high flying
moves in and some mat holds, but Parker got back into it by cheating,
but the match was pretty even at this point. And indeed the theme
continued as the match went back and forth: Parker would try to slow the match
down while Pillman used some high flying moves. Parker had more success
when working over Pillman's leg, keeping his offense to a minimum.
Pillman got a flurry together, and got the pinfall with a Missile
Dropkick. A very solid match- **1/4
Match 8: 2 Cold
Scorpio and Marcus Bagwell w/Teddy Long vs. Pat Rose and JD Wolfe
Rose is a wrestling veteran, and Wolfe too is very experienced. Essentially, as
before, a squash to make Bagwell and Scorpio look good,
and it did just that. The jobbers had some offense, usually through
cheating, but Scorpio and Bagwell were always able to fight back quickly.
Scorpio got the fall following the Scorpio Splash- *
Match 9: 'Stunning'
Steve Austin w/Col Parker vs. Sting
A very solid main event match. They exchange holds on the mat early in this one,
with Austin trying to slow the match down, while Sting would
try to explode out of any holds he was put into. Sting managed to throw
Austin off his game plan, and he stalled outside the ring a few times due
to his frustration. The match went pretty much back and forth again, with
Sting getting in explosions of offense, while Austin worked on the arm
and cheated. The match ended in a DQ when Brian Pillman ran in and
attacked Parker and Austin, leading to a DQ- **3/4
Overall a solid show here. The main event was
good, and there were two solid matches on the undercard involving Brian Pillman
and Steven Regal.
The rest were all squashes that did their job, and overall there was
nothing bad (although nothing to go out of your way to see).
Solid recommendation here: 6/10
